Care: You may need to provide support stakes for taller plants to avoid drooping. Petals can be fragile so take care when cutting.

Harvesting: Cut flowers as needed after they bloom and remember that petals are fragile.

Germination: 7-14 days

Preferences: plenty of water, full/partial sun, well-draining soil

Special Instructions/Tips: Sunflowers are sensitive to root disturbance and do not transplant well, so direct sowing is recommended.

• Sunflowers are native to North America. Record of them being cultivated can be traced back to the 18th century. They were traditionally used by Native Americans for fabric dyes, food, and decoration.

• As mentioned above, the flowers of the autumn beauties are edible! Flower buds can be fried and the petals used as a garnish in salads. They have a bittersweet flavor.

• Birds are also a fan of this flower. Situate a bench in your garden and see if you can spot the golden finch!
